Eye Shadow Palettes Worth Your Money

When I get ready in the morning there are a couple palettes that I constantly find myself reaching for. Some palettes can be a little pricey, but if you find one with colours that are very versatile then it is a good investment. They are good for travelling, and if you chose the right one then you are able to create a million different looks with a single palette.

The first palette that I ever bought was the Natural Eye palette from the company Too Faced. This can be bought at Sephora and retails for $36.00. I was drawn to this palette because of the pretty sparkly pink shades and the different browns. The palette has 6 shimmery colours and 3 that are matte, and I find it is so easy to make wearable daytime looks with this palette. My favourite is using the middle color "silk teddy" all over the lid with the bottom right shade "cocoa puff" in the crease, and the top right color "sexspresso" in the outer "v". The shadows are really good quality and are very pigmented. You do not need a lot for the shadow to show up opaque. I think this product is definitely worth the money.

The next palette which I think is a palette that is worth the investment is the famous Urban Decay Naked Palette. They have two different versions of this palette, the Naked 1 and the Naked 2. I liked the naked 1 more because the colours are warmer toned, where as the naked 2 has more cooler toned colours. The colours in both are very similar though, so I would only purchase one or the other. This palette retails for $50.00 at Sephora. This palette really does speak for itself; the colours are absolutely gorgeous. When I first played around with this palette in the store I instantly fell in love and had to buy it because it is so perfect. The palette comes with twelve shades, one which is matte, and each one is truly more beautiful than the next. The colours are so pigmented, and seriously go on as smooth as butter. The palette is unique because it has such a large variety off colours. It has pretty shimmery neutral pink shades, golds and brown shades, purpley mauve colours, and even gunmetal blues. There really is a million different looks you can create with this one palette. On days where I want a subtle natural look I love "naked" in the crease, and "buck" in the outer "v". For a pretty shimmery eye I love "sin" all over the lid and "toasted" in the crease. I also wear "virgin" as a highlight in my inner corner pretty much every day. This palette also comes with an eye shadow brush and an eye primer, so that is definitely a plus. I cannot say enough good things about this palette. This product certainly owns up to its reputation.

Right Side of the Palette

The last palette that I think is a good one to purchase is the Lorac Pro palette. This one retails for $42.00 at Sephora. This one is nice because it comes with 16 colours, 8 are matte and 8 are shimmery. Like the Naked palette, this one also has a great variety of colours that allows you to create many different looks. The shadows in this palette are also very good quality and apply very opaque. I love using "champagne" all over the lid with "mauve" in the crease and "pewter" in the outer "v".  Another pretty combination is "gold" all over the lid with "garnet" in the crease. This palette truly is really beautiful and some of colours are so rich and unique. This palette also comes with an eye shadow primer, which is a nice bonus. I definitely get a lot of use out of this palette, and I think it is a good investment. (excuse the dirty packaging, it is impossible to get this palette clean, but hey, it is well used).

Overall, my advice to you when choosing a palette is to look at the colours logically. Some palettes have gorgeous aquas, greens, and bright pinks, but are you going to wear those colours on a daily basis, if ever? Probably not. I try to find a palette that has a few neutral pinks or light brown colours for all over the lid, and pretty taupes and darker browns for the crease. It is a plus if the palette comes with a white for a highlight, or a matte skin colour shade for a blending colour, but these aren't completely necessary. Look for a palette that you can see yourself reaching for every day because otherwise it isn't worth your money. If you do find a good versatile palette though, then you will find that it is one of the best investments you ever make.

Let me know in the comments below what your favourite palette is. I am always looking for new products to try.

Face of the Day

I decided to do a face of the day post since I liked the way my makeup turned out today. I had to go to my teaching placement today so it had to be something classroom appropriate, and I think it is a really pretty daytime look. It would also be easy to darken this up a little fornight time. Oh and in case you were wondering, I did not wear a pink sweater to teach :)

Face Makeup

Foundation:
The foundation I used today was the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua and I am in the shade 10 which is beige. I like this foundation because it is more of a tinted moisturiser, so it is super light on my skin. I also like that it is water based and not oil based so it won't clog my pores or break me out. It also has SPF in it which is a plus since I barely every remember to wear sunscreen.

Concealer:
The concealer that I used today is the one that I use pretty much every day because I really like it and it is the NARS Radient Creamy Concealer in the shade Chantilly. I find that this concealer blend in really well and does a really good job of brightening up my under eye area. It also stays put for the most part and does not crease throughout the day.

Face Powder:
The face powder I used today is also one of my holy grail products that I use every day and it is MAC's Mineralize Skin Finish Natural. The shade I am wearing right now is Light Plus. This product does a great job of setting my foundation and just makes your skin look completely flawless. I love this stuff.

Bronzer:
The bronzer I used today is also one that I use everyday. This is the Soleil Tan De Chanel and it is a really nice cream bronzer. I did not expect to like a bronzer in a cream form, but it is a lot easier to apply than I anticipated. I just use a stippling brush and dab the top of the brush onto the product and then use it to bronze my temples, hair line, and contour my cheeks a little. The brush picks up a very tiny bit of product so the bronzer ends up looking really natural, and the product itself is not orangey at all. This product was a little on the pricey side, but it will seriously last me forever.

(Excuse the little brush hairs that are stuck in the bronzer)
Blush:
The blush that I used today was by Dior and is in the shade Rosy Glow. It looks very Barbie pink in the package, and that is the colour it applies as, but as you wear the blush it changes to create a rosy pink that is flattering on your skin tone. I love this blush because it is absolutely gorgeous and find myself reaching for it often.

Highlighter:
The highlighter that I wore today is the one that I wear everyday and it is MAC's Mineralize Skin Finish in the colour Soft and Gentle. It is a really pretty champagne colour that gives a nice natural glow to the skin. I put this on the inner corner of my eyes, above my cheekbones, and down my nose.

Eye Makeup

Eyeshadow:
The eyeshadow that I used today is Chanel's Eyeshadow Quad in the #39 Raffinement. This is a really pretty neutral palette that I find I have been reaching for a lot. The colours are very pigmented and blend well, and I find the colours look really nice together. I use the top right colour all over my lid, the bottom left colour in the crease, and the top left colour in the outer "v" area. I use the bottom right color in the outer corners if I want to darken up the look a little more.

Mascara:
The mascara I used today is Cover Girl's Lashblast Mascara which is my favourite and I use it every day. The brush is spiky enough that it combs through the lashes well as it applies the product so you can layer on the mascara for great volume without any clumps. This is seriously the best mascara I have ever tried.

Liquid Eye liner:
The liquid eye liner that I used today is the same one that I have been using for years. This is by E.L.F and is the most perfect liquid liner ever. It has the most amazing brush that makes applying it so incredibly easy, and I don't think I will ever use another kind ever again. (I forgot to include this product in the picture at the top).

Pencil Liner:
The pencil liner that I used is by Essence and was just a cheap one that I picked up at the drug store one day when I was out of eye liner.

Lips
Lipstick:
The lipstick I used is one of Chanel's Rouge Coco Shines. It is #54 and is in the shade Boy.  I love the formula of these lipsticks because they go on really creamy and are super moisturising. Although in the picture it is coming off as being very pink, since it is quite sheer so it does look very natural on the lips. It also has a pretty floral smell to it which is a plus.

Final look:
The pictures really do not do it justice at all, but here is a close-up of how it turned out.

How to Choose a Makeup Primer

Makeup primers are an extremely useful tool, but they are also a product that can be a little intimidating. There are many different kinds of make-up primers, and it is a little difficult to know what kind will work best for your skin type. I am going to go through and answer your most asked questions regarding makeup primers, and by the end you will be able to pick a primer without any difficulty.

What the heck is it?
A makeup primer is applied to the face before you put on foundation to help your make-up stay on all day. This is especially useful for people with oily skin because the primer creates a barrier between the oil on your skin and your makeup and prevents your makeup from sliding off throughout the day. A makeup primer also creates a smooth surface for your makeup and fills in pores so they are less noticeable.

How do you use it?
Before you apply the primer you need to wash your face, and then apply your moisturiser. Once your moisturiser has completely dried, you are able to take a small amount of primer and apply it to your face. Make sure that every inch of your face is covered, and that the product is nicely rubbed in, and then you need to wait a few minutes for it to dry. Your primer needs to be dry before you apply your foundation or the products are not going to layer nicely.

Cream vs Silicone?
There are two different types of makeup primers that you can buy, cream and silicone. Depending on your skin type there maybe one that will work better for your skin.

Cream Primers - this formula works well on people with normal to dry skin. The cream will help give extra moisture to their skin, and won't cause dry skin to flake like the silicone primers do. Cream primers usually come in an "oil free" version as well, so if you have sensitive skin this one may be less likely to break you out.
* My favourite Cream Primer is by Laura Mercier and retails for $32.00 at Sephora
Silicone Primers - this formula works well on people who have normal to oily skin. Silicone primers apply very smoothly and almost feel like silk on your face. They also have a really good staying power, so the oil on your skin will not make them slide around and the product still sticks in place. Silicone primers will also prevent people with oily skin from looking shiny throughout the day.
*My favourite Silicone Primer is by Tarte and is the "Clean Slate Poreless 12-hour perfecting Primer". It retails for $30.00 at Sephora

Why are some primers coloured?
You may see that there are primers that come in peach, green, and purple shades, this is to correct certain colours on your face.

Green primers - Green primers are used to conceal blemishes, and counteract redness associated with acne and rosacea

Orange primers - Orange primers are used to hide under eye circles, and diminish the appearance of age spots and freckles.

Purple primers - Purple primers are used to brighten dull skin, counteract discolouration, minimize the appearance of wrinkles, and even out skin tone.

*Smashbox is one brand that carries these colour correcting primers. These retail for $38.00 at Sephora

Starter Makeup Kit for Beginners

I thought I would do a post outlining items that I would recommend to someone who is just beginning to wear make-up, and is looking for staple items. I tried to pick items that I own that are more affordable, as I know that when people first start buying make up they might not have the money to splurge on more high end items. The first few items I include are basic items that I think everyone needs, and then I include a few extras that are less necessary, but still items that I personally use on a daily basis.
Basic items in the kit:
Foundation
This is something that may not be necessary if you are someone with flawless skin, but for the rest of us who are mere mortals, this is a nice tool that helps to even out your skin tone and hide any blemishes or discolouration. Foundation can be a little difficult to choose, so I always get someone to help find a good shade match for my skin tone. Based on the needs of your skin, you will also need to decide if you want your foundation to have a light, medium, or full coverage to it. Many foundations also come in different formulas depending on your skin type, so look for a product that is made specifically for dry or oily skin. One of my favourite foundations is Revlon's Nearly Naked foundation, and I am in the shade "Vanilla". This is a liquid foundation so I find it easy to apply and blend into my skin. I also find that it doesn't appear cakey, and does not oxidise (turn orange) throughout the day. This product is also very affordable and retails for around $10.00 at the drug-store.

Eye shadow
I personally am someone who wears eye shadow every day, even if it is a subtle sparkly champagne colour all over the lid because I find it is a pretty way to brighten up your eyes. The eye shadow I like to use for this is All that Glitters by MAC. It is a really gorgeous sparkly beige colour that is flattering for any skin tone. I know MAC eye shadow might not be the most affordable choice, but I really do love them because the colours are so pigmented and are really good quality. You really do not need to use a lot of product for their eye shadows to become opaque. The second eye shadow I would recommend is either MAC's Sable or Satin Taupe. They are really pretty crease colours that are easy to blend, and I find I always get the most compliments when I use one of these two products in my crease. Sable is described as a "gold-plum colour with a bronze pearl", and Satin Taupe is described as a "taupe colour with silver shimmer".  If you were only to get one shadow though, I would go with All That Glitters because a crease colour is not completely necessary.  These shadows retail for about $18.00 at the MAC store.

Mascara
This is probably the one make up item that I could not go without. As much as I love lipstick, without mascara I find my face just looks naked. I am someone who spends ten minutes doing my mascara because I am a perfectionist and I use a generous amount, but for most people it is a quick and easy step that makes a huge difference in your overall appearance. My favourite mascara is the Cover girl "Lash-blast" mascara, and actually I've heard that this is Taylor Swift's favourite as well (fun fact). I find that it makes my lashes look longer and gives them a lot of volume without making them clumpy. The brush takes a little getting used to because it is so fat, and a little spiky, but out of all the mascaras I've ever tried (trust me that's A LOT) this is my favourite. This mascara can be purchased from the drug-store and retails for around $10.00.
Bronzer
This is another item that I think is a necessity for your beginner's make up kit. As someone who has always been cursed with being extremely pale in the winter, bronzer has definitely helped over the years to make me look more human. There are tons of bronzers to choose from, so you just need to decide which kind is right for you. They sell bronzers that come in a pan form (which is what I prefer), but they also sell bronzers that come in the form of little beads in a screw off container. These are good because they seriously last forever... unless you are like me and lose a few balls each time because they fly all over. You also need to decide if you want a matte bronzer, or one with shimmer. I prefer more matte ones in the winter as they are more natural looking, and ones with a subtle shimmer in the summer for a glowy look. Try to look for one that is only one or two shades darker then your natural skin tone, and one that is more brown than orange. The one I like is from E.LF Cosmetics  in the colour "Golden Bronze" which you can purchase at Target, and retails for only $3.00. I like that it comes with three different bronzey shades so you can combine the colours you like depending on how fair or dark you are that season.

Lipgloss
To me lipgloss is an essential part of a beginners kit because most girls start wearing lipgloss far before they start wearing make-up. It is just a fun addition that you can put on to make you feel more girly and pretty, and I find that it makes you look like you put a lot more effort into your make up then you really did. This lipgloss by BonneBell in the shade "cappuccino" has been one of my favourites since highschool, and is a really pretty nude colour. I am someone who is picky with smells, and will not put anything cherry anywhere near my lips, but this has a subtle caramel smell to it that is to die for. I don't even remember the last time I purchased this, so I am not completely sure how much it currently retails for, but it is probably around $5.00

Extra Items:
Eye primer
This is something that I use every day because I find that it helps my eye shadow stay in place all day. There are eye primers that are clear, ones that are skin colour, and ones that can look more like a cream eye shadow. I prefer the skin colour ones because they help to hide any redness you may have on your eyelids. I also like the cream eye shadow ones because they really help the eye shadow that you put on top to pop.  A good skin colour primer that I like is MAC's "Painterly" paint pot. These retail for $24.00, but I know that Maybelline has a version called "colour tattoos" and I have heard that they are just as good. Those are probably around $10.00
Concealer
If you are someone who has good skin then you might not need concealer, but for people with more problem areas it is a good tool to help cover up breakouts and hide undereye circles. There are two types of concealers, ones that brighten, and ones that give more coverage. The brightening ones have a bit of coverage to help hide undereye circles, but they also have a highlighting ability to them to help brighten up your face. This kind of concealer you generally wouldnt put on breakouts. The concealer you need for hiding breakouts is one that is a bit thicker and provides more coverage. Once again, I usually get help from a sales associate when picking a concealer because sometimes it can be difficult to pick one that matches your skin tone. For brightening concealers my favourite is the Maybelline Age rewind dark circles eraser in the "brightening" shade. I think this product does a great job at brightening up my under eye area. My only issue was that you need to twist the top in order for the product to come out, and eventually mine broke and wouldnt twist anymore so I was unable to use up all the product that was left. I think this one retails for about $12.00 at the drug-store. For a full coverage concealer I like MAC's studio finish concealer. This product retails for $22.00 at the MAC store.

 Setting Powder
Setting powder is something that I use everyday over my foundation, or sometimes on it's own if I my skin is looking good that day, and it is meant to help make your make up stay in place all day. If you are someone with oily skin then I would add this to your beginners kit because this is a necessary product for you. Dusting setting powder on your face before you head out the door will help keep your oily skin under control  throughout the day, and prevent your face from looking shiny. If you are someone with dry skin I would stay away from this product because it will make your skin look more dry and flaky. The setting powder that I use every day is the MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, and right now I am in the shade "medium" This product retails for $35.00. Another good one that I have used is the Revlon Photo Ready Finisher. Here I choose the translucent one, however they do have different shades you can choose from. This one retails for around $12.00 at the drug-store.

Blush:
Blush is another item that is not a necessity, and I find it takes a bit of practice to figure out where it should go on your cheeks and how dark it should be applied. When done properly, however, I think it can look really pretty and really helps to warm up your face.  In the fall winter months I stick to more of the peachy-pinks, or baby pink colours for a gentle flush, and in the summer I tend to reach for more coral pinks. A blush that I would recommend that I think would look pretty on many different skin tones is MAC's powder blush in "Peachykeen". This is the first blush I ever bought, and I think that the colour is a really good standard colour. These blushes are really pigmented so you barely need any on your brush, and they retail for $25.00

Highlighter
This is something I also use every day to highlight different places on my face. I use this on the inner corner of my eye, on my brow bone, on my cheekbones, and down my nose. Highlighters come in many different formulas, but I find that powder ones are easier to apply and blend in than cream or liquid ones, and look more natural as well. The one that I use most often is by MAC and is the Mineralize SkinFinish in the shade "Soft and Gentle". These retail for $35.00

Eye liner

Eye liner is also something I use every day, but is not a necessity if you are just starting out. I wear two kinds of eye liner every day, a liquid eye liner on my upper lash line, and a pencil liner on my lower lash line. Liquid liner can be a little difficult to use, but with practice you eventually get the hang of it. My favourite liquid liner is by E.L.F cosmetics and retails for $1.00! I just find this one is so easy to apply, and doesn't smudge throughout the day.  I don't really have a favourite pencil liner, but I like the mechanical ones that let you twist up the product, instead of the ones you need to sharpen.

Eyelash curler
I know there are people who have maybe never used an eyelash curler, but this is a tool that I use every day. Although they can look scary and intimidating, with a bit of practice they are really easy to use.... Just do not blink! They make your eyelashes look longer and ensure that they stay curled all day. The one I use is made by Revlon, and I really like it a lot. I forget how much I purchased it for as I got it years ago, but they retail for about $5.00 at the drug-store.
